Volume III

What is madness? If you look into a dictionary it will tell you that madness is "The quality or condition of being insane." so a better question would be: What is insanity?

Insanity is a quality that cannot be measured, cannot be proven, and is entirely in the eye of the beholder.

But it is so much more.

Insanity as we know it is defined by society and more specifically the boundaries to personal action and thought that society creates. Yes there are people who are said to have deranged minds, these people have brains that for one reason or another do not process information they way ours do. Thus the insanity is primarily in the hands of one group, the empowered majority, the more power they have the less they need majority. (See any ancient religion's conventions on heresy) However for the most part madness is determined by the society around you, this can shift dramatically if society changes.

Take Malton for example, If I were to go out and kill until my weapons ran red with the blood of men and women and I would not be viewed as insane. I would either be viewed as a hero or as a terrible enemy depending on where I went, but not insane. In the case of Malton the greatest madness would be to try to hold on to the old ideas of society as if they still applied. Society did not kill to survive back then, humanity was not in a war with the dead then. As a result of that war rules of conduct change -if there are even rules anymore- killing and bearing arms are now second (or even first) nature to many citizens of Malton, citizens that previously had never contemplated true killing are now on the front lines. Women, children, men, it does not matter death has been a great equalizer to Malton, where there were once boundaries made by gender, color, race, an creed there are now boundaries of principle. The things that separate people now are mainly what they wish to work towards, survivors do not mingle intentionally with killers -even killers as philanthropic as us- and such. The old boundaries still exist there is no doubt about that, it will take more than the end of life as we know it to cool that hatred of mankind, but we have made a start.

What does this boil down to? sanity is irrelevant. What we shall do is what we shall do. Insanity itself is made by society and so can only be truly decided by the individual experiencing it. If you believe something is madness then it is madness, regardless of what the masses say. If you find that what you think is sane is regarded as insanity by your current peer group, it is time to move and find a group (Or make your own way) of peers that shares your view of insanity.

Of course this could be madness.
