What is this site for?

It's designed for players of the browser based MMPORPG, Urban Dead. The concept behind this project is to allow the players who are so interested to come together and stretch their creative muscles, breathing fetid life into the shell that is Malton City.

Any true fan of the Romero films will realise that great thing about the movies is the way in which the characters grow, with their own wants and desires. Just levelling your character for the sheer hell of it maybe the point of the game, but many players have come up with other ways to make this doomed populace more believable. The streets are a dangerous place, gangs of vigilantes gunning down both the living and the dead, people holing up in police departments, groups of desperate survivors being hunted through the dark, moonlit streets as they struggle to keep ahold of their stolen supplies afer a mall raid, shambling corpses around every corner...

Why did you build this site?

I built this site as a college project. It was my first foray into the world of PHP. As far as my brief went I fulfilled it before I even decided to make it a public site.

Originally I had intended to build a personal blog for the purpose of documenting my characters journey through Malton as he fought for his own survival. And then, after my 20th smoke and umpteenth cup of tea (thats right, I'm a Brit!), I was struck with the thought that it would be a lot more interesting to build a site for others to do the same! So, after the original concept was 'adjusted' enough to fulfill the multi-user requirement, I hosted it on a friends server, and mentioned it in the forum.

I had expected the thread to get mouldy and dust covered with maybe one or two hits from unfortunate n00bs getting themselves lost in forum, but lo and behold, I suddenly had members! So that was it, I was now commited to creating the type of site that people wanted. I have concentrated on making it accessible with all images alt tagged (I think!), and it really is a work in progress. So far I have made a lot of changes to the code, tightening security and generally making the experience of navigating the site a more enjoyable one (hopefully).

So, I have managed to put a few requests into place, in varying degrees, and I will continue to improve the code as the fancy takes me.

The beauty of simplistic games like Urban Dead is that you use your imagination to fill in the gaps. With so many games pushing polys around like there's no tomorrow, and procedural mapping sometimes taking precidence over gameplay, it's refreshing to see so many people adopting this simple, yet compulsive universe. Mind, I do have an extreme softspot for both the classic Romero movies, as well as old 'retro' games. So I'm not really that impartial!

If you want to keep a diary, but you think my site sucks, then go make your own, you ungrateful, winging git!
